Inspired by and thanks to Stacey Cross.

Football Fan Dates & Mates is a new social app now approved for iPhone/iPad for football fans to meet one another and social networking and live meetups. The idea is to find fellow team fans near you so you can team up for team building, meetup for events or even date up. We are not picking sides so you can do that !

ReallyReal App – Really Approved

really-real-hotIMG_6659If you start your relationship, arrangement, hookup, meetup or friendship with a lie, why would you expect anything but failure?

ReallyReal is a new dating, matchmaking, friendship, buddy, hangout/hookup whatever you want to call it app for iPhone/iPad. You will see in the app we have a new twist or angle on this complicated process by asking users to be really real about themselves before they connect with another person. There are features that get you to be really real about yourself. If you prefer being a fraud or flake or whatever, then use those other apps. Our goal is to be “inclusive” to anyone or perference.

ReallyReal is APPROVED for iPhone and iPad, there are no plans for Android. Click on any image for AppStore.

rr-facebookYou won’t need a Facebook account either and won’t have to answer a lot of stupid questions. There are no stupid options and match types like these:

  • “Curvy” body type (for women to choose, for men to search by)
  • “Open Relationship” as a relationship status

whatever those body types and relationship concepts are really about anyway as we strive to include all.

Everyone and we mean everyone we have spoken to is really tired of the way apps and dating sites put you in “slots” or having to “qualify” for the app or ask you crazy psycho questions to help you figure out who you would be compatible with. We do know and believe your astrology chart has great details on who you are it but does not tell you who you are compatible with until you find that person and do their chart and you may find some compatible planets and signs. Even then it is really hard to make the perfect “star” match. We do not pretend to have the perfect solution, but we have seriously found in beta testing and many conversations this is a better approach. Stay tuned.

iTunes

Here is what we said on iTunes – ReallyReal is a social networking chat/dating app designed for those that are tired of meeting false personas on other dating sites. Users are asked to share a “live” realtime pic before both people can chat with one another. At ReallyReal we don’t ask about your preferences or personal questions. You only need to send a live pic so that it shows that you are really you. No Facebook or other app account required. We hope you are ready to be real when you meet on Really Real and find that special someone you are really looking for.

35660687_sProfile

rr-photos-toomanyfacialsSerious one or two face pics is enough. The girl on the left had 15 pics begging the question – why so many of just her face and what was she really hiding? Seriously, add a full body pic and a face pic. Ok, you may not look like Greg (right) and Jen (right) but people are looking for all of you not just your face.

Don’t show your friends unless have their permission and know you are posting a pic with them or are offering them as a team and you have their approval to post them with you. 17099259_sAbout your Profile, seriously don’t write a novel, just write some ideas about you as if you are having a conversation with the person you want to meet and explain what you are all about then. The idea of any friendship is about getting to know another person and learn how to be of help to them and them help you in your life pursuits and challenges.

Really Real Reviews

gossiping

We asked a few people to review the app before its release on scope and content. Here is just one of the many comments from a man and woman:

I’ve tried all the dating sites. If they have been advertised, I’ve created an account and gone through all the drama that comes after. Those men lie so much! Their weight is underestimated, their age is at least 5 years off, and don’t even get me started on the pictures! I’m pretty sure I went on dates with more covertly married men than I did single guys. It was pretty ridiculous. The towel was thrown in and I never wanted to go on another online date, but my friend Monica insisted I give this site a try. She said it was much different, but I didn’t believe her at first. She called me over to her apartment and we had a girls’ night in with a delicious bottle of wine and looked through her prospective.

25568905_sI’ve been on a few dates from the people I’ve met on here, and all of them look like their pictures! I never thought that would happen. The men I’ve met were the same online as they were in person which is fantastic. I need a real man, instead of some grown up boy pretending to be a man who can’t even take care of himself.

I’ll tell you this, I would have been sorry if I hadn’t tried this dating site. People on here are ReallyReal. No lies, no deceptions… just the honest truth. If a man is getting divorced and already looking to date, he will up and say it. It’s so refreshing that people just say what they actually want instead of hiding behind preconceived notions of what other people want. For a new dating site, I expected there to be few options, but I think it’s because it is new that it has so many people on there. It a real dating site, full of real people, and it’s just what I was looking for!

Road Rules

Protecting yourself must always be your highest priority. Here are a few road rules for any kind of dating and add your own.

cell-phone-theft-111- Delete any user you don’t trust or don’t like the conversation or delete yourself.

2- Don’t meet anyone you don’t know or trust except in a public place like a coffee shop or bar (not a bus station). You safety is the most important part of this process. Bring a chaperone or friend who can see you at all times.

3 – Make sure other people know where you are going, the name of the person you are meeting and have some text or call-in rules to make sure you are ok at all times.

4 – If you are uncomfortable, leave and make sure you are not followed or that the person knows your address or where you are going. If you think you are being followed, drive to a friends house or police station.

uniprimetimeselfie-hg-710x434bieyes-photobooth-728x90-E&M-yellowSelf portraits and images are nothing new.  Since ancient times artisans have painted themselves and even the great impressionists painted themselves when they wanted to express themselves and show a deeper self.  Look at VanGogh’s self portrait and tell me if you don’t see his pain.  Today we have smartphones making them ideal tools for self photography called “selfies.”  Inspired by our friends and news articles, we came up with our own Top-10 reasons for selfies with yourself and with friends. #SelfieSunday girls are more than just one day but every day.  One of the recent stories on selfies appeared on The Ellen Show where she and the sorority sisters of DG at ASU took a selfie for charity (click on image for the show).

ellen-Here are some of our Top-10 reasons for taking selfies:

10. Show Off Hot Bods/Boobs/Butts – As the saying goes, “if you got it flaunt it” – so show the best of what you have to all your friends.

37920800_s
9. Beach Ready Bods – Working hard at the gym getting that hardbody, fitness, getting ready for the beach, resort or vacation trip selfies show your chiseled trim bod needs, no demands to be shared with boys, wannabe boys and to show your girl friends your bod is better than theirs.  Competition is stiff so why not show all the work you are doing to get hot.  Time for a new dating app, get ReallyReal – click on image.

42770923_s9. Jealousy –  Show selfies want to show off to your ex, or someone else to prove that the guy is missing out on something great. Random bold lipstick and full body selfies really give this away!

20906650_s8. New Do – Have a new fashion, style, and look just want to share it.

38772434_s7. Beauty-Makeup – You face is what everyone sees first and stays with them if it looks great so take your time to do your makeup and then take the pic to share and even show your sexy side.

bieyes-photobooth-728x90-E&M-yellow6. Self-Centered – Though there are many reasons why we love ourselves but it doesn’t take much to do it and gives you reason to look good, stay health and be happy.

43404575_s 43404602_s5. Chanel — #OOTD (Outfit Of The Day) – As Coco Chanel reportedly once said, “if it’s a lousy dress, they will look at the dress, if it’s a great fashion, they will look at you.  So, get your Chanel game on and get a great outfit of the day!

42328562_s4 – Sharing – Whats a great pic without sharing it with your soul mates, friends, fans and even some frenemies to show them you are having fun and they should join you at the party, hookup or even just envy you.

19202086_s44816369_s3. To Get Attention – Girls that feel insecure (also the girls who post a selfie everyday) or just need plain old attention. They post pictures to get a lot of likes and comments to feel special. Constant duck faces and serious faces are all for wanting attention.

29332299_s2. Confidence ! – Girls suffer more from confident than almost any other emotion because it is hard to show confidence good or bad.  Showing confidence builds confidence arrogance and being confidence helps “lift all boats.”  Confidence leads to kindness as it is hard to be mad when you feel great !

1. Fun – “Girls just want to have fun” is a lifestyle and having more fun, parties, going wild and living life to the fullest.  Showing others you are fun is a great way to show you really are having a good time.

The Good, The Bad and The Very Ugly on Facebook

From January 9 to January 13, Real Simple magazine encouraged all of their subscribers to “be nice on the Internet”. It was the beginning of an annual movement by the women’s lifestyle publication to create a nicer Internet.  They said after looking at the “negative impact of rudeness online” they would provide expert tips on etiquette for the age of social media.

While the Real Simple movement didn’t gain national attention, it’s a reminder to all of us to watch out for our own rude online behavior…especially when it comes to Facebook.  Facebook can be downright ridiculous when you scroll through your newsfeed. Braggadocios posting about their children, jobs, money, nail polish, clothes, cats, cooking skills and everything in between can make you want to say “screw it all” and cancel your account.

We believe there are three types of Facebook users, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. After outlining those three, I’ll take you through a few tips to make sure you fall into only the first category: The Good.

The Good: This Facebook user posts when they have something important to say or a picture that is unique and fun. They don’t post to wrack up comments and Likes and they never leave you guessing with posts like “Something good is about to happen.” If something good might happen, they tell you what it is. This is a kind, courteous Facebooker who never uses profanity and posts their political or religious views in a thoughtful, unobtrusive way.

The Bad: The Bad Facebook user shows up in your newsfeed a few times per day. It’s usually to make a comment about politics, quote the Bible or post yet another blurry photo of their cat. They also like to post self-portraits where only half their face is in the photo.

The Ugly: This is a person you have definitely considered unfriending on Facebook at one point or another. Their constant barrage of complaints and emotional outbursts in the form of Wall posts is tiring and stressful for all 1,400 of their Facebook friends. They post a lot of profanity and want someone to comment or Like every post they make. They don’t interact well with others and post a lot of ambiguous information (“crying today”, “someone doesn’t love me”, “it’s going to be an amazing day” etc).

Which Facebook user are you? Hopefully you fall in the Good category, but just in case you’re on the edge, here are five tips to make sure you are a great Facebook friend.

  1. Give all the details. If something is great say what it is and why it’s great. If something isn’t great, don’t post it unless you need help from one of your friends or are willing to provide the details. For example, if you have a big move coming up and need to ask for help or want advice on moving companies, give all the details and expect to get some comments.
  2. Post only good pictures. Just because it’s Facebook doesn’t mean that blurry photos or photos where only half of your face (or dog, or child or boyfriend) is visible are okay.
  3. Limit your posts. Don’t be the person that shows up in the newsfeed every single time someone scrolls though. Post only when you really have information that’s worth sharing.
  4. Keep it clean. Keep posts clean of profanity, nudity, complaints, negativity and even consider using sarcasm on a limited basis. It can be hard to be sarcastic in two sentences and can come across as snarky instead – simply bad taste is bad form.
  5. Be a good friend. Encourage your friends, like their posts, comment with positive, helpful and caring responses.

You should treat people online how you would treat them in person. Isn’t that the way you want to be treated?

Note:  Literally everyday I get asked about Twitter as people understand Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram, Pinterest and even Snapchat.  However, Twitter seems to hard to grasp or understand.  Here is why Twitter is important.  First, Twitter is a newsfeed as people don’t go to websites any more they go to Twitter first and if they see an idea or headline they want to see or know more about they will then go to your website as most people do not think your website has all the news they want or need.  Second, Twitter is social media you can find and meet prospective clients and discuss business easily.  I am not suggesting you do as many do “thank for following me and here’s my sales pitch.”  I am suggesting like every other kind of business connection, you offer thought leadership first in the form of blog posts and great content – why your business is the best business to do business with.  Third, Twitter is fun, you can find interesting facts, topics and political pandering.  Fourth, most important Twitter is social media like a cocktail party you engage and have conversations with others not just toot your own horn.  Being nice will bring you more rewards than just being boastful.

If you need help with you Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin or other social media efforts, please email us cross@gocross.com or on Twitter @techtionary. You should also follow one of the great social media experts who has worked hard to gain followers and you should consider his services to help you – @evankirstel.

Theater Study and Movie Production and Analysis Using iFlipTipsPro For iPhone and iPad

iStock_000015664473XSmallAre you a fan of theatrics? Is watching live action shows, orchestrated music, unique lighting, and special effects take place in the flesh a hobby close to your heart? Then you’ve probably entered the field as a team member of stage design or production crew. The difference between Theater and the Analysis-focused course of the subject is their concentrations. In Theater, you learn actor-related history, techniques, and the art of live entertainment. In Analysis, you learn about the prominent figures of stage production and the progression of story-telling, to stage, to film. It zones in on the construction behind a show, and techniques on how to bring it together. While Theater practices lines, movement and character association, Analysis practices script interpretation, scheduling tips, creative input, and emphasizes team cooperation. Theater is the sundae toppings that dress up a scoop of ice cream – it makes the iced milk a sweet desert. Whereas, analysis is the ice cream itself, without it, the treat could not exist. But this chilled indulgence, which comes in so many flavors, requires a tedious amount of work to make, as does the making of a play, formed with detail and dedication. This app is like an all-in-one utensil to help you make the most luscious flavors and accentuate your brand of studying.

Easy Learning

Notetaking involved in this type of work is all about stage design metaphors and scene framework, introducing strategies for scenery painting and innovation, lighting components, combinations, and terms, mapping out the costume process, music enhancing, and instilling management ethics. In order to make this portion of the course smoother, use iFlipIdeas to store all of the different topics into separate folders. Each of the three main sections use this organizing system for neat and easy reference, and when you delete them, they are kept in the archive section when you want to restore them for future pursuits in subcategories of theater or old lectures. Each of the three main sections also includes a text, imagery, audio, and video tool to highlight the key ideas of anything that is better learned by example. It’s also really convenient to be able to make these notes in class, and then just carry it all around at once without equipment or paper!

iStock_000013773033XSmallCostuming, for instance, is a duty that involves a talented eye, functionality and practicality, and remembering lots of terminology. Their tools alone include a collection of clothing references throughout the eras, becoming linear with lighting designers, and creatively composing accessories, fabric and easy dress-changes for the best imitation of the scripted character. Take pictures of fabric samples and use the text tool to track their costs. Use iFlipCards, which are virtual flashcards, to create Q&A formats of vocabulary and costume themes from different time periods to quiz you for the various exams on plays.

The same concept can be used for scenery painters who must use multiple strategies in order to create 3-D landscaping out of cardboard flats. They must utilize the entire space of a set, while imagining original insertion and removal of props and effects. They must then get all their ideas out on a 3-D diagram, either virtually using programs or physically using material. The imagery tool and video tool can be great assets to this process at every step, using iFlipCards for their many questions requiring answers.

Lighting designers must learn difficult terms and have detailed attention to incremental discrepancies of color change and effect on stage, which is where quiz cards are a great aide once again. This huge amount of topics can also be said for each of the other subcategories included in stage production, and will go in greater depth if you chose to take one of these responsibilities on as a concentration for your degree.

Teams

You’ll find yourself doing a lot of group work on recreating plays and having individual tasks that call for visual models or representations with researched evidence and resources for your ideas, costs, and countering negative aspects. For every presentation, use the slideshow feature to exemplify your models. Take pictures of location for scenery, inspiration for fabric, or video tape lighting concepts and changes, and record music samples. The iFlipSlides is a tool that will really help you with plot points, scene organization, and the three-act structure. You can make a folder for each play, and make a slide for each scene – record the lines, take pictures, tape movement specifications, and input notes about the particular scene in the text tool. Then you can use the sorting tool when you make your own play, so you can see them as a whole, or when you read sections out of order in the play to keep track. The three-act structure involves a lot of figuring out how to make the play whole with a beginning, middle and end. Every scene has multiple acts, and each one of these requires a different set of blue prints to produce. So practice with the slideshow tool to dissect a script properly, and see it in a full spectrum – that way, all the details that go into each act can be visualized virtually instead of on a giant, scribbled out chart.

Musical aspects of the production are centered on intuitive feel for emotion, audience reciprocation, and flow. Flipslides are essential for sorting out that key sequence with audio samples, while making notes for the tech-guy controlling the switchboard during performances.

Smiling colleagues having a business meetingAs a director, you will be responsible for keeping an eye on production progress and making sure that each member of the crew is compromising yet voicing their views succinctly. This task requires lots of communication! But it is often hard to make group gatherings whenever something needs an agreement or vote – until now that is! TECHtionary has invented this app that also shares each note, slide and card online through Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and email! This is especially useful when you find a bump in estimated production costs, and need every one’s opinion to decide on the alternative! Post pic samples of the black and brown combination suit for Mr. Green over the agreed green and brown comb is best based on cost difference. Or post a video of you asking whether this certain emotion within Mr. Green is better for a particular scene over another sample of the actor’s interpretation of his lines during table reading. Fast, simple and accessible summarizes the boost in self and group study that iFlipTipsPro provides.

Even More Simplified

With the iFlipCal, meetings, studying, and every event in your life are never missed because you are notified through your phone instantly for reminding. It just makes those big group meetings a lot more planned out. Plus, assignments can be scheduled in intervals so that you are never behind.

10 Twitter Pet Peeves – The Good, The Bad & Often Ugly

If you’ve been reading ChicsTech for a while, you remember the post we did on the Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Facebook. We talked about those Facebook users who post countless photos of their cat, gross details about what their eating or doing and posting 50 times a day in general. Unfortunately, some of these users are also getting Twitter accounts and their behavior on Twitter isn’t much better.

Granted, one of the greatest benefits to Twitter over Facebook is the 140 character limit but in addition to that, so many tweets are sent each day that tweets don’t stay in your “feed” for very long.

Even so, users are using and abusing the power of the tweet and we’ve compiled a list of our 10 biggest Twitter pet peeves. Do any of these apply to you? Step away from the computer, set down your phone and tweet with care and consideration.

  1. The excessive @ tweeter. This is the person who has an @ sign in every tweet. Frankly, they’re just hoping for a re-tweet from someone with more followers than them. Hate to tell them but tweeting @ celebrities all the time isn’t necessarily going to help you grow your following.
  2. The excessive retweeter. This is nearly the opposite of the first person as this person never creates original content. They just scour their feed and retweet anything they find interesting. What’s worse is that they never edit the tweet and add their own thoughts, they just retweet verbatim.
  3. The “read my blog” tweeter. We all want people to read our blogs. But tweeting only links to your posts isn’t a good policy.
  4. Too many abbreviations. Believe it or not, Oprah does this all the time. Her feed is full of u, r, 4, 2 and multiple other super strange abbreviations. Yeah, you only have 140 characters but plan your tweets accordingly.
  5. A moving avatar image. This is so weird. It’s way too small to actually tell what you’re doing so just use a .jpg and call it good.
  6. The complainer. When one tweet a day is a whine about something, you should probably not have a Twitter account. If you don’t have something interesting to tweet, don’t tweet anything at all.
  7. Pointless profanity. There is so much needless profanity on Twitter. Way more it seems than on Facebook. Keep it clean the majority of the time and respect other Twitter users.
  8.  No description of your account. At least say your first name in the short description of you on Twitter. While you don’t have to give away your street address, come on, tell people a little bit about what they can expect from your Twitter feed.
  9. The moocher. Some people tweet for the single purpose of trying to get companies to give them free things. This goes along a little bit with number 6, the complainer, but tweeting @ companies all the time hoping for something in return is obnoxious.
  10. The person who follows everyone. If you have 10 followers and are following 10,000, there might be a problem. Don’t follow everyone immediately after you join Twitter. Choose your follows carefully to keep some sort of balance between following and followers.

Some of you may have peeves on #hashtags, we don’t but open to your thoughts.  Just like with Facebook, be a respectful Twitter user. Of course, have fun with this social network but do unto others as you would want others to do unto you.  And since we’re talking Twitter, don’t forget to follow this blog @BeautyApps for more great information.

Staying Alert Using iFlipTipsPro – iPhone/iPad App

Woman drinking coffee directly from a dispenserAs college students, we are always looking for ways to keep awake. Some of us are downing ridiculous amounts of energy drinks to keep alert in class, while others are making multiple stops to the local coffee shop as a daily necessity. Some of us are instant coffee advocates for our wallet’s sake, filling those thermoses four, five, sometimes six times a day! Up late last night partying or kicking butt on that X-Box Live with a dozen friends! Then it’s out for lunch today with parents trying to indulge them and the ‘quality time adage’. Then there’s the studying-frenzy deep into the grayish dawn light, until you find yourself rereading the same sentence ten times over before losing count. And finally there’s the crashing at our keyboards – you know how it is, waking up with the letter nnnnnnnnnn, in a frenzy of on-going pages in your word document. Ugh.

Stop vying for your skinny espresso, doubling up on shots with each passing month. Stop frantically searching for the best brand of energy drinks with the least calories. Stop stocking up on ‘just-add-water’ items. Get healthy, stay awake, and resist the tendency to spend money on those sketchy prescription alternatives. With iFlipTipsPro from TECHtionary, replace your caffeine fix with a new addiction that’s equally good while remaining natural.

Apples, and Oranges, and Carrots! Oh My!

This is a juicing method that requires a machinery purchase of sorts and an outlet for convenient plugging in. This method is probably the most effective of the four. You will be amazed at the amount of energy you’ll have coursing through your body. The negatives include the noisiness and requirement of a slight clean up. But once you’ve tried it, you’ll know why it’s worth the maintenance. First, use iFlipIdeas to take pictures of different juicing types and note the feature discrepancies with the audio tool. This way, you’ll find the best bargain. There are a number of superb juicers; it’s just a matter of what kind of extra characteristics you want for convenience. For instance, some require you to peel the fruit before hand; others allow you to drop it in entirely. Some juicers have one trash bucket and a grinder to clean; others call for a little more elbow grease.

ScribbleGrams-iphone-4a

Second, buy items on sale. You can use the iFlipPads to take a picture of the coupons in the newspapers to remind yourself of the sales, and write notes about ones to bring with you during your shopping trip. One of the best combos includes carrots, celery, an apple, and lemon. Some people are prone to trying this technique with berries, and although it’s possible and provides nutrition, it’s very little juice for each piece of fruit. Then there’s watermelon, pineapple, apples, oranges, spinach, carrots, and parsley! There are even recipes with garlic – but it’s a very pungent taste, so use sparingly. Keep a list of recipes that you experiment with in the iFlipCards section. The Q&A style format is perfect for taping videos of you making the combos, or adding reminders of which to alter and which to throw out. Put all the recipes in one folder with a different card representing each, or categorize the folders by main ingredients with various versions of the recipe. The folder system keeps all your notes, cards, and slides organized, and the archive section stores all deletions in case you want to revisit a forgotten recipe. The more you get familiar with your body’s response, you can pick out fruits that provide you with the most utilized vitamins for your liver, heart, eyes, and most importantly your mind! It’s like a surge of energy! If you’ve been eating poorly for the past few months with fast and junky food, or polluting your body with alcohol and other recreational substances, it can be such a cleansing boost – while making you nauseous. But if that’s the case, it does get better!

There are a lot of juicing joints that sell shots of wheatgrass for $1.50 and up! The problem with these places is that their drinks are normally supplemented with some sort of sherbert or yogurt which can be lower in calories or fat, but is still high in sugar. And wheatgrass can be grown by the tub in your own room, and doesn’t warrant the extra cost or a gag reflex. Don’t take wheatgrass on an empty stomach. If you do, you may find yourself feeling a very strong headache which is a good thing in essence because it’s healing damage done by toxins in your body, but can give you a bad experience. Another thing most consumers don’t know is that fresh juiced fruit and veggies lose their nutrient-value after the first ten minutes! Once it goes through that shoot, the extraction is at its’ highest peak, and it soon wanes with every passing moment. That’s why, if you were to drink it right after you made it, you’d have that wired energy to conquer everything on your to-do list! It usually lasts for a good eight hours with no crashing drop.

Non-digested

Ice your feet! This may seem crazy, but icing your body even when it’s already cold out is a mind numbing way to shock your muscles and bring you back to life! To do this you’ll need 1 pound of ice (but they usually sell it in 5-pound increments), a bucket, and mildly warm water. Fill the bucket halfway with ice and add the water. Since most students are in dorms with no tub, the feet way is a condensed version; otherwise you’d use 20 pounds of ice in your bath instead. Then just slip your feet in at once! This is a more instantaneous form of staying awake, and it doesn’t last very long, in fact, you may consider keeping it on a towel in a corner for the night in case you need it to refresh your senses while studying. oops keyKeep it away from outlets or electronics of any kind! Accidents happen! –This is a funny one though because you can take a picture or video of you and the puckered face you’ll make as you submerge your feet. Then, post it online via Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin or email so that everyone can comment on it. Use iFlipSlides to keep a record of it, and stage an on-going bet with the first post to see how many times you’ll have to do it during the night to keep you up. It’s a fun way to be interactive with your friends which will give you the adrenaline to keep your eyes pried open too.

If it’s mighty difficult for you to stay alert while commuting to school – sometimes you may even miss your stop – then try jogging in between classes. Even running in place is a good way to keep your heart rate up, get exercise, and stay in high spirits for the day. Or get up a little bit early to put in some dance moves! Jam out to your favorite song with your ear buds in, and shimmy your way to prepping for the day.

Find Some Fresh Air

app-whisper-recommendation-ifliptipsA lot of the time, we exhaust our mental capabilities by staring at a computer screen for hours upon end, or strain our necks pouring over notes. Record your notes for classes, verbally, with the audio tool in iFlipIdeas. Then, listen to a few sessions instead, while playing those games, or doing some light stretching, or even just taking a walk around campus. You may miss some things initially, but repeatedly listening to it will instill the information even so. Use iFlipCal to schedule small study breaks where you can listen to notes while still spending a few minutes away from homework. It might be all you need to come back with a brilliant idea for your essay, or the correct answer for that equation you’ve spent hours on. With the push notifications, you can schedule every important event including that extra ten minute dance session in the morning and down to the tiniest self-study reprieves!

With these suggestions, staying awake isn’t so damaging to the body. Having an on-hand device to help you makes it all that more impacting. Just make sure to catch up on sleep at some point. To avoid burning out, it’s recommended that you get at least a solid eight hours of undisturbed sleep once a week (that’s sufficient for us college kids) to make sure that your body receives the time it needs to organically repair and recharge itself.

Apps & Ideas for Getting Better Sleep – Top 10 Checklist

Apps & Ideas for Getting Better Sleep – Top 10 Checklist

woman beauty in bedThis is another attempt to help you get not just the sleep you think you want but the rest you need.  We have reviewed more than one hundred other articles, conducted our own research and developed some new ideas on helping you.  Here is our Top-10 Checklist for getting better rest and sleep:

1 – Learn to Relax – transition to sleep – music – visualizing

2 – Stress Management

3 – Power Nap-Snooze Tips

4 – Sleep Schedule & Diary

5 – Drowsy

6 – Throughout the Night – Ceiling time

7 – Staying Alert – Snap Out of It

8 – Room or Environment

9 – Eating to Sleep

10 – Sleep Apps

1 – Relaxing – Not surprising the hardest thing people face is learning how to relax.  This is not sitting and watching TV, reading a book, exercising or yoga, reducing alcohol/caffeine intake or any number of other techniques.  Relaxing to sleep is something completely different.  Sleep relaxation is getting the mind to rest in order that the body will rest.  That is, we really don’t need a lot of sleep but often need a lot of rest and often look to sleep aids to help them.  Drugs and even vitamins designed to help people sleep generally don’t work and resulting side effects like other drugs often have disastrous results such as sleep walking, falling asleep while driving, headaches and others. They can also have a placebo effect of implying they help but really do not.  One of the simplest techniques is to listen to calming music and by creating your own mind-quieting sound. Meditation, often considered something mystical is merely creating your own sound or chant which you combine with deep breathing to relax the body and slow the mind from racing out of control. If you find yourself back worrying, then repeat the sound or chant.  It is not easy but often very worthwhile

2 – Stress Management – Some people talk their way out of stress.  For many simply telling another person their problems reduces their own stress.  Stress can occupy an already busy mind.  That is, the mind works all the time whether you are awake or sleep.  Naked young woman sleepingSome research suggests that we make even make better decisions when we “sleep on” the problems.  Not saying we all do but certainly the mind works on the problem even when we are not thinking about it.  Reducing stress by listening to ocean waves, gentle blowing wind or other restful music allows the mind to not be so obsessed by the problem you are facing.  iSleepTrack has a selection of meditation-expert recommended sounds to help you take your mind “off” what you are stressed about.

3 – Power Naps – Snoozing – Few would doubt that short power naps or snoozes are a good way to reduce stress, digest a meal and other benefits.  iStock_000013593460XSmallStudents are often seen snoozing in the library between classes, workers take a nap between business meetings and there are increasing reports of drivers falling asleep while driving cars.  Worse are cases where airline pilots fall asleep during flight.  However, there are a number of studies and real-life examples that show taking “cat naps” improves alertness, reduces fatigue and increases energy.  Businessman asleep at his desk on white backgroundThis is not the “coffee break” approach but in iSleepTrack the snooze feature is designed to help you get those “power naps” between meeting, classes and other busy moments of the day.  The Snooze feature gets you in the mood for short resting periods.  In other words, the concept of iSleepTrack is to recognize the major elements of your day and incorporate features to help you better manage your energy levels and biological needs for rest.

4 – Sleep Schedule & Diary – Nearly all the research we found on better sleep techniques mention maintaining a regular sleep schedule and suggest you set the same time to sleep every day.  It is doubtful that anyone will be able to do that even if they tried.

At the same time, people generally go to sleep within an hour or so nearly every day because there biological clock tells them to.  couple lying in bed back-to-back having lovers' quarrelOne of the interesting aspects of sleep patterns is that there are “morning people” who go to bed early, get up early and are most productive early in the day and are done for the day around 4 PM or so.  The opposite are “night people” who go to bed late like midnight or later, get up late and are most productive later in the day.  From our research, nearly 70% of people are night people while the remainder are morning people.  iStock_000015903071XSmallA few say they are both but generally are really night people.  Often couples who live together find themselves at opposite ends of the morning-night person scale.  This makes for complex sleeping arrangements if one person is a morning person and the other a night one.  Setting a schedule may also be more important for one rather than the other and even when they do adjust their schedules getting rest or going to sleep may also be difficult. In iSleepTrack, there is a log of your sleeping or resting periods.  We have also found that many people sleep in 3-4 hour segments.  That is, they go to bed early and get up and work again from 2-4AM and then back to bed for another respite.  iSleepTrack helps you track your rest periods and from the vantage you can make better decisions regarding your rest/sleep schedule.

5 – Drowsy

Few doubt that we all get drowsy at some point throughout the day.  Meetings, classes or just working at a desk are especially difficult for most people who find the topic(s) boring and the speaker/teachers equally so.  Bored panel of judges or interviewersStudies show that people drowse because they need more information at a faster rate to stay alert.  Looking at it another way, we can read five times faster than we can hear and we can capture visual-action even faster.  This means sitting around listening to a teacher or a business presenter is very boring because we want more information to keep our mind busy.  To overcome boredom or rather overcoming being drowsy can take many forms.  Being busy, walking around the block, or taking notes in class or a meeting, for example, provides a record of the meeting.  This is a simple tool to wake yourself up but also how you interpreted the meeting which whether in court, to share with others who are not there or confirm with management what actually took place.

6 – Throughout the Night – Ceiling time

Ceiling time is time during the night when you find yourself wide awake (insomnia) staring at the ceiling.  Some people just lay there; others get up and read, watch TV or do something else.  Going back to sleep is what is desired but the mind is ready to get up and get going.  Getting rest is what is really needed.  Sleepless night? However, how do you get the rest you need.  You may not really need all the sleep you need or that you should sleep in intervals rather than one long stretch.  Studies suggest that not that long ago when humankind was still living without shelter in forests or trees, we didn’t not get that much sleep for fear of being attacked or eaten.  This suggests that one biological tool in the form of snoring provided a simple means of driving away predators.  In addition, after exhaustive search and study of more than 300 citations, where there are hundreds of detailed articles, books and remedies (including 300+ patents) on snoring, there was no research on the origins or etiology of snoring.  There was only one hypothesis other than the fact that men snore more than women by almost 2:1, that snoring could be associated with male-female attraction (men defended women at night by snoring).  Our theory stands that snoring as a means to prevent attacks from predators or other humans.   Few would argue that snoring is a real bother even cause for divorce or other inter-personal problems.  If snoring is a bother, than there are herbal, prescription and even surgical means to correct sleep apnea.  As one source noted, wild animals do not snore as they sleep in the ventral (crawling) position.  Humans and some bull dogs (and a few others) prefer sleeping supine (on your back) the primary cause of snoring.   Sleeping on your back, causes the jaw to drop, the tongue to fall backward and vibrate resulting in snoring.  There are other contributing factors such as weight, tonsils, adenoids, age and others which increase noise, duration and type of snore.  The other impact of snoring resulting in not getting enough sleep can be critical causing the person to fall asleep on the job, driving a vehicle, even while waiting for the traffic light to change.  Then there are the social faux pas of falling sleeping while talking to a spouse, in class/meetings, movie theatres and other events.  While the loudest snoring on record is 87.5 decibels (source: Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Fairbanks and Fujita Editors on page 3), there are many other reports of snoring above 80 dB like that of a garbage disposal or vacuum.  Meanwhile if you find yourself staring at the ceiling, we suggest you get up, occupy your mind with your problems or issues and return to sleep when you are really tired not when you think you are.

7 – Staying Alert – Snap Out of It

Woman drinking coffee directly from a dispenserStaying alert is more than a double shot of espresso.  You can fall asleep anytime. In a recent survey, 90% of all college students said they had fallen asleep at least once in class.  While few admit to it, studies show students fall asleep or “nod out” at least once a week in class.  In a recent evening class of only five adults, one of them fell asleep right before my eyes.  I would like to think my class was more entertaining than that, she admitted that she had been up for more than twelve hours without a break and was really tired.  The purpose of the Snap feature in iSleepTrack is to provide you a tool when you do fall asleep.  Snap or rather “snap out of it” provides a vibration or optional ringtone/music tune to provide a gentle or louder means to stay awake.

banners_changes_38 – Sleeping Room or Environment

The room or environment you attempt to sleep has a major impact on your ability to sleep.  If you are in the airline industry or spend your life in “red eye” flights, you know how to sleep in a narrow airplane seat or worse on an airport bench.  One simple solution even if you are in a great pillow-top bed in a cool bedroom is to quiet your body to the point of resting or sleeping.  Research studies suggest that room conditions including outside noises can have a profound impact on sleep.  There are soothing relaxing ambient music pieces in iSleepTrack to help you find that quiet time.

9 – Eating to Sleep

Eating too much or too little is a “chemistry experiment” which can get out of control quite easily and have a negative impact on sleeping.  Drinking too much alcohol or caffeine has obvious effects.  However, eating to sleep starts by keeping a diary of your diet and resulting sleep patterns, is recommended.  The adage, if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it certainly applies to getting better sleep.  iSleepTrack has a simple diary and notepad system so you can keep notes about all your activities.  We have found that notes on exercise, sleep and diet often result in finding a better way to manage your energy, alertness and sleep patterns.  In addition, snoring is three times more common in obese persons.

10 – Sleep App

main-screen-2We would not be surprised that there the number of sleep apps would certainly be on the top ten categories for all apps.  The following are some ideas we have incorporated into a new app for iPhone/iTouch and iPad called iSleepTrack.  The key features are Snooze, Snap and Sleep.  The Snooze feature is designed to let you get your “cat nap” anytime; you can select your snooze time and a wakeup vibration or tone/tune.  The Snap feature is a new feature not found in any sleep app we have found so far.  Snap is really a “snap out of it” feature that you put in your shirt pocket and when no motion or limited motions are detected, it gives you a vibration or tune/tone.  Designed to help you overcome falling asleep in class or on the job, it should not be used while driving (we don’t need any lawsuits). In addition to sleep tracking and logging features, Sleep offers you a scheduling tool and other tools which may be found in other sleep apps. The key point is we have incorporated extensive sleep research into our app.
